Grab your regular ol flour, and sugar and butter and get ready to bake some holiday sugar cookies! These easy and fun cookies are a holiday tradition and this modified recipe tastes moist and fluffy and are the perfect cookie to bake and decorate on a snowy day.
There is just something about the holidays that makes us all throw caution to the wind and indulge a bit more. When I think about indulging, I think SUGAR. Sugar is something I try to limit in my day to day. But come December, I am honkering for a cookie or two or twelve and hot chocolate and cocktails and all things extra nice.

My kids love these cookies as well, we frost them with either royal icing or a simple glaze. My new kick is “healthier food colorings” as I can live with sugar as a treat but not whatever chemicals and additives are in typical food coloring. There are so many great options out there – here are a few I’ve used and loved :
- Color Kitchen this is what I used here and you can see how vibrant the color is
- Whole foods also carries a great plant based one
- Color Garden is also a great option that uses natural ingredients
There are quite a few companies making more natural colors and they are not only vibrant and easy to use but so much better for your kids to enjoy!

This recipe makes a ton of dough, I usually half it and freeze the other half for a later date. It will keep very nicely in your freezer for up to 3 months. If you want to bake off cookies right away I suggest scooping the dough into rounded scoops on your cookie sheet, if you prefer to use cutters to make shapes chill the dough at least one hour preferably two to let it set up and roll out more evenly. Use a large clean work surface and dust with powdered sugar and roll and cut your dough shapes. I love using these cookie cutters as they aren’t metal and don’t rust over time and contains lots of options for all the holidays!

These cookies are super adorable but the best part is unlike some sugar cookies they taste even better, they remain soft and have a great just sweet enough flavor. Let me know if you give these cookies a try, I would love to see what you bake tagged on instagram @saltspiceandallthingsnice. Happy Baking!
